STAYING HEALTHY IN AMERICA

So as I am sure most of you would know (or gather) that I am a very fussy eater.
At home, on a daily basis I eat only organic, fresh produce; loaded with fresh fruits, veggies, lean proteins and healthy fats.

My husband and I planned our honeymoon to go to America; of course I didn't think about the fact that good, healthy food over there can be hard to find.

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.

I researched and asked around for healthy, organic places to eat before going, and I actually found it very easy; so I thought I would share some of my go-to places to eat.

LOS ANGELES.
Much easier to find healthy food than New York; everyone in LA is a lot more health conscious.
There are smoothie and health 'bars' on almost every corner, alongside some of the coolest exercise studios in the world.

Smoothie bowls & best breakfasts:

  • Amaze Bowls

  • Backyard Bowls

  • Earth bar/cafe

  • Equinox Gym Earth Cafe in WeHo.

  • The Butchers Daughter (Venice in LA & Soho in New York)

Best Lunch / Dinners:

  • Plant Food and Wine (Vegan in Venice Beach)

  • The Butchers Daughter (Venice in LA & Soho in New York)

  • Cafe Gratitude (Vegan in Beverly Hills)

  • Gracias Madre (Vegan)

NEW YORK.
Now this is where the challenge really set in; everywhere you look there is McDonalds, Slice Pizza, Burger Bars and odd little takeaway food places.

My best advice is go to WholeFoods Market (they are everywhere) and stock up on some fresh fruit and veg, big bottles of Alkaline water, healthy dips and gluten free granola.
As the exchange rate was terrible, each meal was at least $150 AUS, so to save some money we got fresh coconut yoghurt, almond milk, organic berries (which are SO cheap over there) and a good quality granola, and had this for breakfast most days).

Breakfast:

  • Blue Stone Lane Cafe in Soho - these are also everywhere as little takeaway cafes, but the one in Soho is more of a sit down nice cafe; they have amazing buddha bowls and great coffee, it's an Aussie owned cafe so they do their food just as good as us!

  • Charlie St in Soho - we went here 4 days in a row. They have smoothie bowls, avo on toast, fresh juices and great coffee. Charlie St is also an Aussie owned business.

  • The Butchers Daughter in Soho - did I mention they also do Echinacea elixir shots? Great for me as I had the Flu whilst in New York!

  • Two Hands in Soho - Aussie style breakfast and coffee. This was really the only place I found with good Acai bowls! They also do buddha bowls and delicious Avo toast.

Lunch / Dinner:

  • Uncle Boons in Soho - the best Thai in NYC. Get there early because there's a massive line before it's even open.

  • Cecconi's in Brooklyn - fantastic upmarket Italian restaurant below the Brooklyn Bridge - try and get a seat outside by the water so you can admire the beautiful view of Manhattan.

  • Jack's Wife Freda in Soho - more of a Paleo style restaurant. Try the roasted cauliflower and crispy kale!

  • Brooklyn Bridge River Cafe - Michelin star restaurant (men must wear suit jackets) overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan.

  • Bar Italia on Madison Avenue near Central Park - delicious Italian, very fresh, but a bit more pricey. try the Salmon and Spinach.

I hope this helps if any of you need some healthy go-to's whilst traveling in LA or NYC!

E xx
